Most people don't
give their roof vent much thought... that is, until they begin experiencing
problems with their dryer. The main problem with running a dryer vent to the
roof or even a second story is GRAVITY. The hot air coming out of a dryer is
laden with moisture and lint. This stuff weighs something, even though it is
spread out pretty thin in the exhaust flow. The blowers on most dryers can
propel this thick air for only about 18 feet upward, since it must not only
fight gravity, but the friction loss of the duct surface as well. At the end
of the day, what you find on your roof vent looks like this:

In most cases,
this whole problem can be eliminated by NOT running a vent to the roof!
There are alternatives which can make a major difference in both safety
