From the description you provided, I get the impression that when you opened the lid, the water level in the tub was overflowing its normal level. If this is what you were trying to convey, then the problem is most likely a sticking water valve. Try this little test first.

Start the machine on a wash cycle with the water level set to Large load (high) and use a "warm" water temp. When the tub is almost full, unplug the machine from the wall and see if the incoming water flow stops immediately. If the water valve is the culprit, it will continue to allow water into the tub even with power removed, as this is a mechanical malfunction of the internal diaphragm of the valve. If the water stops immediately after unplugging the power cord a few times, the valve is not the problem.

The other issue which can cause this is a broken pressure tube or air dome. This is a small hose mounted on the left side of the bottom of the tub which runs up to the water level control. If the machine were to have gotten violently off-balance, it is possible to damage these components. The hose and air dome can be visually inspected by removing the front panel.

My Frigidaire FWS223RFS1 washing machine just flooded my laundry room. The leak comes from the bottom of the machine and the backside is completely dry. I opened the lid during the flooding (it was in the first cycle and it was like a cut off valve had stuck and the machine didn't know it was already full. Any ideas? Could it be a stuck water valve?? Look forward to your response.
