Ice is crushed by the gear teeth inside the ice bucket. When you press the "cube" button, there is a lever on back of this bucket which lifts up and opens a door in front of the bucket that allows the cubes to pass thru the opening whole. From there, the ice will then go thru the door opening on the fountain assembly. If the bucket was taken out and not inserted back in correctly or the rear shifting lever is not moving when you press the ice button, you will only get crushed ice. Also, if this lever is frozen up and cannot shift, you'll only get crushed.

You can observe this operation by selecting "cubes" and removing the ice bucket entirely. With the door light switch held down and the door open, you can push the ice lever and see the small solenoid go up and down in the back where the rod goes thru. If nothing happens, you'll have to remove the bin enclosure assembly where the solenoid is and test it there. The GE S/S refrigerator manual on our Manuals page is exactly what you'll need if you intend to repair much on this box.

If the shift lever is not moving when you pull the crusher bin out and inspect it, simply dump the ice and flush the entire assembly with hot running water to remove any blockage and free up the shifter.

The door ice dispenser on my GE Refrigerator, Model No GSS20IEMB, is supposed to dispense either crushed or cubed ice depending on which button on the dispenser is pushed. However it will only dispense crushed ice no matter which button is pushed. I'm assuming this is a problem with the door dispenser mechanism etc. The icemaker itself works great. Anything I can do about this?
