This is a typical garbage disposer:

Tips For Best Results-

Always use cold water when grinding food. This breaks up greasy substances rather than melting them, as hot water would. Melted grease only hardens a short way down the pipes as it cools, and eventually becomes a source of blockage.

Do grind bones, coffee grounds, etc in the unit. This helps keep blades sharp and swivels turning. Most better units have this included in the use and care guide, but who reads that stuff Smile

Never pour bleach or other chemicals into the unit! This could dissolve seals, causing motor failure. If unit is sluggish to drain try the following:

1. Run water in sink until HOT

2. Place stopper over disposer opening and fill sink completely with the hottest water.

3. Reach down with rubber gloves and remove the stopper, then turn on the disposer quickly.

4. As soon as water runs out, turn unit off and see cleaning procedures below.

Jammed Disposer Tips-

If your disposal hums but doesn't grind when you switch it on, something is probably stuck inside. Shut it off, then push the reset button or the reversing switch on the bottom of the unit. Newer disposals often have a hexagonal fitting for an Allen ® wrench on the bottom. Insert the wrench and turn it back and forth to free the mechanism. With older models, a more brutish approach may be necessary. Lever a broom handle against the side of the drain opening and against your disposal's blades. Move the blades back and forth to release the clog.

Cleaning Procedures-

1. Fill grind chamber with ice cubes from freezer
2. Add 1 cup of rock salt (ice cream salt)
3. Cover opening with stopper...do not run water.
4. Start the disposer and let it run until grinding noise stops. (about 5 seconds)
5. Remove the stopper and flush unit with cold water while running for 10 seconds.

This will sharpen the blades and removes residual crud from the interior! There's a new product out for disposers (and dishwashers) that will help keep your disposer smelling fresh:
