The new "universal" coupling with the metal insert doesn't fit all models. I have a Whirlpool 5100 series washer and the lip on the metal insert in the coupling prevents it from fitting all the way onto the shaft. Should I file the lip off?
The coupling pictured here looks like the correct one but they tell me it's no longer available.

You are mistaken, sir. The new style coupling with the metal insert indeed fits all direct drive machines. You must tap it onto the shaft using a 1/2" socket until the shaft is flush with the center bushings on both halves of the coupler.
