If your machine has developed bad odors over time, there is a chance that something may be trapped in the drain area of the machine which is causing the problem. On many brands, there is a lint screen ahead of the drain pump which will trap debris that can hold slime ad cause this issue. It helps to remove the lower panel and inspect the pump for a filter trap, such as the one for the Duet washer shown below. As the picture describes, there is an accumulation of stuff in there which will promote mold and algae growth if not removed periodically.

Additionally, it is recommended to use powdered HE detergent instead of liquid, as the liquid version contains aminal fat which contributes to the buildup of such odors. Fortunately, there are new products which will remove the hidden buildup on your front load machine with relative ease. See the link below:
