Most bearing failures in top load washers are preceded by tub seal failure. When the seal leaks water out of the tub, the water will enter the transmission thru the top, causing the oil in the transmission to be displaced. The oily water is then thrown in a circular pattern as indicated below whenever the machine is running. If you see the following, you can bet you are in for a fairly major overhaul:
